Soul Sunday

It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.

If we cannot now end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity  Our greatest strength as a human race is our ability to acknowledge our differences, our greatest weakness is our failure to embrace them.

People of different faiths, like yours and mine, sometimes wonder where we can meet in common purpose, when there are so many differences in creed and theology. Surely the answer is that we can meet in service, in shared moral convictions about our nation stemming from a common worldview.

This week with the debates taking so much of the headlines it has brought to light the differences that exist in our world.  Differences that divide people, relationships, nations, worlds and more.

These differences cannot and should not be ignored.  But all too often they are.  Differences cause judgement, judgement accomplishes nothing but to further divide us. No matter our differences whether it may be religious, political or whatever else it doesn't mean people cannot get along, be friends or work together.  But all too often that is what seems to happen.

Differences require a little more work, listening, compromise, understanding, open communication, etc.  Most important it requires an openness of the soul, mind and heart.  And the hope that one day we can put aside all our differences, judgments,  categories such as gender, race, sexuality, and any of ones which we use to dismiss people and simply come together to make this world a better place!

We have to find a way to celebrate our diversity and debate our differences without fracturing our communities.

Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible - the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family.

A world without walls is the only sustainable world....if the world is dominated by people who believe that their races, religions, ethnic differences are the most important factors, then a huge number of people will perish in this century.
