Soul Sunday

Forests, lakes, and rivers, clouds and winds, stars and flowers, stupendous glaciers and crystal snowflakes - every form of animate or inanimate existence, leaves its impress upon the soul of man.  ~Orison Marden

If people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, I'll bet they'd live a lot differently.

In the wee hours of this morning I stood outside in hopes of seeing the Orionid meteor showers.  The sky was predicted to light up with many shooting stars.  Disappointingly I did not see any, though I have in the past. Early morning hours sitting on lounge chairs, bundled up in so many layers it was hard to move just to take in nature's spectacular shows.

Even without the shooting stars there is something incredibly spectacular about a star filled sky.  How little one can feel when looking up at all those stars burning brightly, a romantic awe for life fills the soul, a reminder that we are not truly alone, that something larger than our world exists, the fact that the universe if filled with mysteries.  In those moments I wonder how anyone can look up at a star filled sky and not believe that something greater then what we know exists.  How can it not?

The soul needs those moments.  Nature is ours for the enjoying yet cannot help but wonder how often it goes unnoticed or unappreciated.  Not only that but how many people live in polluted or dense urban areas where nature becomes depleted.  Where star filled skies cannot be seen.  Some not even knowing such skies or beauty exist.

Nature, and it's star filled skies have much to teach us.  So much beauty and light to inspire us.  A sense of peace and serenity.  But we must open our souls to it, get out of our own way.  Put aside those distractions that keep us all from truly living, from enjoying what we have naturally been given by nature. Not only that but help protect this beauty as well.

This Sunday do whatever it takes to find that beauty of nature.  Do whatever it takes to maintain it, increase it and appreciate it.

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls. ~Mother Teresa

God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.  ~ Martin Luther
